Feeling tense? Tension headaches are common and can remain for minutes or even weeks. It is squeezing or pressing in character and worse in the evening. The exact cause of tension-type headaches is still elusive; however, it is thought to be caused by muscular irritation around the skull.

Try these essential oils and acupressure points to relieve the pressure and find relief.

Lavender

When in doubt, use lavender. Its calming properties help relieve tension and stress. Energetically, it assists one in getting past insecurities and being open to speaking one’s true feelings.

Lavender can be applied neat although I always recommend diluting for children or those with sensitive skin.

Gallbladder 20 or “Wind Pond” is located behind the neck where the neck muscles attach to the skull. This point nourishes the brain and relieves a stiff neck and shoulders. It’s also helpful for migraines, blurry eyes, and fatigue.

It’s a very powerful point for enhancing clarity when confused or unable to form decisions.

Press the lavender oil on both points. Breathe and hold the for 1-3 minutes (or until you feel a shift).

Peppermint

Peppermint is invigorating, warming, and cooling at the same time. It’s an anti-inflammatory and helps reduce muscle tension.

Dilute peppermint before applying by combining 20 drops of oil for every ounce of carrier oil.

Gallbladder 41 or “Foot Above Tears” can help to relieve headaches and eye pressure. It’s located on the upper part of each foot between the fourth and fifth metatarsal bones about two thumbs-distance above the webs.

Holding these points helps bring clarity of direction for those who are indecisive and frustrated.

Lightly place diluted peppermint oil on both points. Breathe and hold the points for 1-3 minutes (or until you feel a shift).
